Connecting with teachers using Twitter @ANMMedu

We created @ANMMedu a Twitter account for our education section about 3 months ago. We want to communicate with and reach teachers who are active on Twitter (there are thousands of them!) share what we do here in the education team and connect with teachers and educators to create a direct line of communication which we can use to:

  • let teachers know what we can offer them – excursions, educational resources + more
  • show we are committed to 21st century learning and communication
  • increase visitation, strategic reach and outreach
  • find new opportunities to collaborate with students and teachers to make innovative use of the cultural assets as well as the specialist and expert knowledge that we have here at the museum

museumedoztweetchat1-1Once we joined Twitter we could participate in TweetChats such as #MuseumEdOz which is held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm EST. Founded by Dr Narelle Lemon #MuseumEdOz  is a dedicated hashtag for teachers, museum educators, curators and cultural organisations to share resources, ideas and pose questions about learning in museums.

Through participating in #MuseumEdOz TweetChats we connected with Cindy Valdez-Adams, a Primary ESL Art teacher in South West Sydney and founder of #tesoloz ESL ed chat, who hosted the September 2015 TweetChat.

We had a rich and stimulating discussion which you can catch up on here. Cindy’s last question really inspired me and after having such a great conversation about the challenges and specific needs teachers can face when booking school excursions I reached out and offered to help Cindy organise to visit the museum with her students.

Together we worked out a program that would suit the needs of her ESL New Arrivals program students and Stage 2 students. The purpose of the visit was to:

  • “make connections” with Art Gallery spaces & museums
  • expand ‘learning spaces’ for my newly-arrived learners (most of whom are refugees)
  • provide authentic learning experiences to gain better knowledge and understanding of the Australian culture

Meeting Cindy and her students on the day of the excursion was a real highlight for me. I was excited to meet in person after connecting online on Twitter and through emails, and I was curious to see how the excursion went. It was a real pleasure to accompany the students and see how a Twitter conversation can develop into a school excursion. Using Twitter also means we can share at the time and afterwards – a great way to get feedback which was discussed in our Twitter chat months earlier. Here is some feedback from the visit:

Connecting with teachers using Twitter has been a great success for us and we are looking forward to future connections with teachers, exploring ways to open up the museum, find opportunities for students and teachers to enhance their learning through a museum visit, delivering great excursion experiences, and whatever else comes our way!
